ARTIST STATEMENT
Layers of line and folds within the sediment provide a sense of connection to my crafted illusion of landscape. The significance of each moment, a fraction of time, is not lost in the grand scale of the completed work.
Removing copper from the plate surface, I begin to cultivate a specific landscape. Multiple prints from multiple plates provide the maps of the excavation, each image a record of past events. Using these samples I am able to discover a significant composition, presenting the final work in formal manner as evidence of this previous activity. In contrast, the monotype is transparent, there are no interruptions in form as it appears. It is a seemingly tangible moment and like tectonic plates, it is dynamic and in constant motion.
I find my landscapes in the darkness; there are no interruptions and the lines are simple, direct and pure. Monochromatic images allow for beautiful and sublime discovery, with sincere limitations to stimulate the imagination.
Engraving is a specimen of the crafted work while the monotype is an act of investigation. Surface only provides record from recent event. Making critical judgment requires an understanding of what lies underneath. I hope my attempt to describe this cross section of history helps one to slow down and take time for deep investigation.
